How much does a car replacement key cost?

The cost of a car replacement key can vary significantly depending on the make and model of your vehicle, the type of key you need, and where you choose to get the key replaced. Here’s a general breakdown of the costs associated with different types of car keys:

  1. Traditional metal keys: These are the most basic keys and can cost between $3 and $10 if you get a duplicate made at a local hardware store or locksmith.

  2. Transponder keys: These keys contain an electronic chip and are more expensive than traditional metal keys. A replacement transponder key can cost between $50 and $150, depending on the complexity of the key and the cost of programming.

  3. Key fobs: A key fob is an electronic remote that can lock, unlock, and sometimes start your car. A replacement key fob can cost anywhere from $50 to $200, with some luxury models like Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Land Rover costing even more. This price range usually includes programming.

  4. Smart keys or proximity keys: These are advanced keys that allow keyless entry and push-button start. Replacing a smart key can be quite expensive, ranging from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the cost of programming.

It’s important to note that getting a replacement key from a dealership is generally more expensive than going to a locksmith or an online key replacement service. Before purchasing a replacement key, Call one of our technicians at Armstrong Locksmith and get the best deals out there.615-625-8000

What is a transponder key for a car?

A transponder key is a type of car key that contains a small electronic chip, known as a transponder, embedded within the key’s head. This chip communicates with the vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) through a unique code, adding an extra layer of security to the vehicle.

When you insert the transponder key into the ignition and turn it, the ECU sends out a radio frequency signal to the key. The transponder chip inside the key then responds by sending back its unique code. If the ECU recognizes the code, it allows the engine to start. If the code does not match, the engine will not start, preventing unauthorized use of the vehicle.

Transponder keys were introduced in the 1990s as a way to improve car security and reduce car theft. Since the transponder chip is uniquely coded, it is difficult for thieves to duplicate or bypass the system without the proper equipment and knowledge. This makes vehicles equipped with transponder keys less attractive targets for theft.
