Transponder keys protect your car’s security with an electronic microchip that responds to a transmitter near your ignition switch. Sometimes called a chip key, it makes it almost impossible for a thief to steal your car. We can replace your transponder key, program a new key or install a new battery for less than a car dealer charges. Our expert technicians can provide prompt service to make sure you can start your car when you need it. We can replace lost, broken, or bent transponder keys. We use the same equipment that car dealerships use, but we do it for less. Our technicians can clone your key if you have one that we can copy. However, we can provide a blank and get the code that lets us program it. Call us at 615-625-8000 to get a key that can start your car.   Our main storefront is located in south Nashville on Thompson lane.

What is a transponder key for a car?

A transponder key is a type of car key that contains a small electronic chip, known as a transponder, embedded within the key’s head. This chip communicates with the vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) through a unique code, adding an extra layer of security to the vehicle.

When you insert the transponder key into the ignition and turn it, the ECU sends out a radio frequency signal to the key. The transponder chip inside the key then responds by sending back its unique code. If the ECU recognizes the code, it allows the engine to start. If the code does not match, the engine will not start, preventing unauthorized use of the vehicle.

Transponder keys were introduced in the 1990s as a way to improve car security and reduce car theft. Since the transponder chip is uniquely coded, it is difficult for thieves to duplicate or bypass the system without the proper equipment and knowledge. This makes vehicles equipped with transponder keys less attractive targets for theft.
