Know what you have
Which one your Honda takes decides the cost and the method. You can usually tell by looking at your existing key, and it is the first thing we ask on the phone.
Roughly late 1990s to mid 2000s. A plain metal key with a chip hidden in the plastic head. Cut by code and programmed to the immobiliser. These are the cheapest Honda keys to replace.
Mid 2000s through the mid 2010s. Blade and remote buttons combined in one unit. Common on Civic and CR-V. We cut the blade and sync the remote in the same visit.
Roughly 2016 onward on most models. Push to start, unlocks as you approach. More expensive because the fob itself is a smarter part, but still well within what an independent shop can do.
Honda is one of the more locksmith friendly manufacturers. For the large majority of Hondas on Nashville roads, including all keys lost, there is no technical reason to involve a dealer.
The mistake that costs people money
This is the single most common Honda problem we see, and it usually arrives as a fob someone already bought online that will not program.
On several Honda models, particularly the Accord from 2018 onward, the same looking proximity fob exists in two versions: one that carries driver memory settings and one that does not. They share a shape and they share a button layout. They do not share a part number, and fitting the wrong one means it either will not program or your seat and mirror memory stops following the key.
The same trap exists across the Pilot, Civic and CR-V range, where several similar looking proximity fobs were used across overlapping years.
Before you replace anything
Honda remote head keys are well known for the plastic housing splitting where the blade meets the body, usually after years in a pocket. The electronics inside are almost always fine.
If that is what has happened to yours, you do not need a new programmed key. You need a new shell and about ten minutes. We move your existing chip and board into a fresh housing and you keep the key the car already knows. It costs a fraction of a replacement, and plenty of shops will not tell you this because the replacement is the bigger sale.
Same goes for worn buttons and dead batteries. Bring the key to the shop before anyone starts quoting you for a new one.

Common questions
Yes, for the large majority of Hondas. We originate a new key from the vehicle rather than copying an existing one. It takes longer than a duplicate and costs more, but it does not require a dealer or a tow for most models. Give us the year and model and we will confirm before you commit.
Usually by a clear margin, because we supply the key and do the programming ourselves rather than marking up a dealer part and charging shop time on top. You also skip the tow, since we can come to the vehicle. We will not claim we beat the dealer on every single model, but on Honda we normally do.
Bring it in and we will look. Sometimes an online fob is simply the wrong part number, particularly on Accord and Pilot where memory and non memory versions look identical. Sometimes it is a counterfeit board that no equipment will program. We will tell you which of the two you have before charging you anything.
Usually not. Cracked housings on remote head keys are one of the most common Honda repairs, and the chip and board inside are normally undamaged. We move your existing electronics into a new shell so the car still recognises the key. It is far cheaper than a replacement.
A duplicate with a working key present is usually fifteen to thirty minutes. All keys lost takes longer because we have to originate from the vehicle. If you come to the shop with the car we can normally finish the same visit rather than booking you back in.
